Good afternoon friends! After seeing how fast ice was starting to melt yesterday morning I was a little surprised to wake up to more snow – a lot more snow. White sky, white ground, white-robed trees. Only thin slivers of dark branches made a horizon in the bleached landscape. Tiny flakes still falling intermittently throughout the day so far, sticking to drifts built up more than a hands-breadth deep in places. Each footfall makes a soft grinding sound like gears sticking, one-two-three quick little surges of pressure as my weight compresses the snow bit by bit. Up among the silent trees the shocking report of a woodpecker’s hammering seems like an echo in reverse.

Numbed and drained by cold, naturally, but there’s a little bubbling brook of excitement and awe at the transformed world, now stained pale evening blue, outside the window. I’m trying to be very slow and cautious, in bed under the blankets for now, to shepherd my energy.

May we grant ourselves space and time for healing and replenishment today!
